What should I do if I want to be a writer? “Seat time” is an expression used by motorcycle racers. It’s exactly what you need if you want to be a writer. Park yourself in the seat and write, write, write. Read what you write aloud or record it and play it back.
What is the most valuable thing I have learned about writing? Writing is in the rewriting. There is no way to stress this enough. I write every page six or seven times, some pages more. Every word is critical. One word can have me pulling my hair out.
How did I start writing novels? It came about through a conversation with a friend. She was talking about how she had always wanted to write a book. I had been writing forever and never thought of it. A few months later, I started Private Places. The same with Dolly Dancer And The Mystic Island, it was my granddaughter’s idea.
Where do I get ideas? I start with a character or a scene and go from there. That’s the fun part of writing, I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen. I never know, it’s the characters who drive the story.
Who is my favorite author? That’s too hard, there are so many good ones.
What is my favorite book? “When Rabbit Howls” by Truddi Chase. It’s amazing that a child could survive the abuse that she suffered. There’s another book that runs a close second, “Fatal Analysis” by Dr. Martin Obler and Thomas Clavin. A psychiatrist has a serial killer for a patient.
